You know the song – rhymes with “Wonderful”!  Maybe it’s on a continuous loop in your brain already. If it wasn’t, and is now, I apologize!

‘Tis the season to be jolly!  I love all things related to this time of year: the decorations, the music, the lights, cheery gatherings of people; just the anticipation of the season is exciting. There is a certain energy in the air that is almost palpable.   It truly is a wonderful time of year.

However, there can be a challenging side to the season.  Many of us, myself included, place a lot of pressure on ourselves to “accomplish things and get stuff done”.  In addition to the festivities of the season, we are also wrapping up the year at work.  We have reviews to write, budgets to secure, projects to recap and proposals to finalize for the coming year’s work.  There is so much to do, so much we want to do, that it can all get a little overwhelming.  We get a bit lost in checking off the multitude of boxes.  So, what to do?  How can we reclaim the spirit of the season?

I’m sure there are many ways to manage the season’s demands.  One that has worked for me and my clients is this: focus on the feeling.  Let’s say you have a long list of to-dos this week: meetings, appointments, gatherings to attend, shopping, baking, wrapping, mailing packages, cards to send, project updates to provide, research to complete…the list can be endless.  Instead of going through the motions, doing things just to check off the box, take time to enjoy the task.  Appreciate wrapping up a project you’ve worked on throughout the year.  Revel in what was accomplished.  Relish gathering with colleagues.  You’ve all had an amazing year.  Immerse yourself into your family.  Bake, sing, play with them.  Remember the magic of the season.  When you focus on the feelings, it all becomes real; tasks to be enjoyed, not just completed.

Season’s Greetings and a Very Happy New Year to you all!
