In a recent roundtable titled Empowering Professionals: A Roundtable on Career Navigation and Lessons Learned, NEHRA members had the distinct pleasure of hearing from three accomplished women on their career journeys and lessons learned. Julie Coote, Former Head of HR for Geode Capital; Harika Diaz, HR Coordinator for Loomis, Sayles & Company; and Kiersten Petersen, Senior Consultant, HR Client Services for Rogers/Gray, gathered to discuss pivotal aspects of career development. I facilitated this panel that was rich with insights and practical advice. We focused on four key themes:building strong networks, the value of resilience, developing leadership skills, and self-advocacy techniques. Below are key takeaways from our discussion:
The Value of Resilience in Overcoming Biases and Barriers
Resilience emerged as a crucial trait in navigating career challenges and unexpected changes. Panelists noted that pivotal moments often happen unexpectedly, requiring professionals to take “leaps of faith” and seize opportunities. Resilience helps individuals push through barriers and biases they may encounter on their journey. Understanding one’s unique strengths and value was highlighted as essential to overcoming obstacles.
By becoming their own role models, professionals can focus on showcasing their contributions to their roles, teams, and organizations, establishing a solid foundation for their growth.
Building Strong Networks
The panelists emphasized that networking is essential for career growth, but it’s not just about collecting contacts. Instead, they urged participants to be intentional, focusing on building relationships within skills and industries they aim to learn and grow in. Effective
networking is reciprocal—providing value to others, not just seeking benefits for oneself. Panelists recommended setting networking goals, including reaching out consistently, being open to diverse perspectives, and positioning oneself as a resource for others.
Never Stop Growing—Be Uncomfortable
Leadership development was discussed as a continuous, self-driven process. Participants were encouraged to actively seek learning opportunities, whether through formal training or real-world experience. Panelists emphasized that effective leaders show resilience, empathy, and commitment to supporting their team members. Attendees were advised to identify and develop their personal leadership style, focusing on qualities that align with their values and organizational goals.
Self-Advocacy Techniques
The discussion closed with self-advocacy, where panelists stressed the importance of articulating one’s personal brand. They encouraged attendees to clearly define their goals and communicate their achievements to others. Being clear and consistent about one’s
value proposition enhances self-advocacy efforts. Professionals were reminded to share their goals and progress openly with their network to inspire support and collaboration.
In summary, this roundtable offered valuable insights into empowering oneself professionally. Pivotal career moments often come when least expected, requiring resilience and preparedness. Overcoming career obstacles means embracing one’s unique value and consistently building strong, two-way networks. Developing leadership skills and effectively advocating for oneself are essential strategies for long-term success.
