Technically, it’s still summer.  However, when September rolls around it means only one thing – back to school!  And Fall.  But, that can be a blog for another day. As a child, I looked forward to going back to school.  A new outfit, clean white sneakers , sharp pencils and brand new notebooks – exciting!  I was ready for the pearls of wisdom my teachers would bestow upon me and my friends.  My children now have this experience, with mixed enthusiasm.  However, I remain a committed life-long learner as are my colleagues at MCG Partners!  In this blog, I thought it would be fun and interesting to share with you a few of our favorite sources for learning and development.

Harvard Business Review is a fan favorite for all of us.  In the most recent publication, the cover article addresses the business case for curiosity.  Kind of appropriate given the topic at hand!  Remaining curious throughout our lives not only enriches each of us but, it has a positive impact to our organization.  A highly recommended read!

TED Talks are also a go to resource.  They are a great way to watch, listen and learn about a topic in an efficient and entertaining way.  I sometimes use TED talks in my coaching as a means to explore a topic through a different lens.  A few of my favorites address the power of introverts, body language, grit, non-conformity, innovation and creativity.  To get started, search TED talks on leadership, communication, management or any topic you find interesting.  If you have a favorite, let us know!

YouTube is another good source for information and learning.  You can search by category and remain up to date on current events.  Or, if you’re like my daughter, you can pick up make-up tips from people who make a living sharing their favorite brands and educating us on the fine art of blending.  Hey, it’s still learning!  Continuing the on-line trend, The Daily Biz Journal, HBR on-line, articles from Paychex, and blogs and international updates from Eisenhower Fellowships.

For those of you who like to crack an actual book – my personal preference – the classics are always a safe bet.  Good to Great by Jim Collins, The First 90 Days by Michael Watkins, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni, The One Minute Manager, by Ken Blanchard, Discover Your True North by Bill George and Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott are the first few that come to mind.  Also noteworthy, Insight by Tasha Eurich, Presence by Amy Cuddy, The Culture Map by Erin Meyer, The CEO Next Door by Elena Botelho, Kim Powell and Tahl Raz and The Age of Agile by Stephen Denning.  There is so much out there with more being published seemingly every day!

To tap into our inner knowledge, a few of us exercise our minds and our bodies.  Yoga, walking, meditation, mindfulness and inspiration apps.  Each of these helps to keep us focused and grounded during very hectic times.

Knowledge is best shared.  If you have a favorite, I’d love to hear from you.  Please contact Heather Wood heather.wood@mcgpartners.com.
